Dating back to the 9th century, Montemor-o-Velho Castle was originally built to defend the region against Moorish invasions. Over the years, the castle underwent significant transformations, resulting in the structure that stands today. Exploring its impressive grounds, we were greeted with a labyrinth of stone walls and towers that offered breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The awe-inspiring views from Montemor-o-Velho Castle were truly mesmerizing, and so was the view within it's walls. Inside the castle walls, we discovered the Igreja de Santa Maria de Alcáçova, a small church with a rich history dating back to the 11th century.

This church is decorated with various sculptures from different eras, including the Nossa Senhora do Ó and the Angel of the Annunciation by Mestre Pero, a sculptor (probably of Aragonese origin) that was active in Portugal during the 14th century.

In addition to the Church of Santa Maria, we found two other chapels, including the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Montemor-o-Velho, located next to the clock tower. Though currently in ruins, this chapel held its own charm, hinting at its storied past and adding to the castle's captivating aura.
